Children’s Community Nursing

Bedfordshire Community Health Services

Bedfordshire Community Health Services support children and young people aged 0-19 years who live in Bedfordshire and require community nursing support when they need extra care. We are specialist trained children’s nurses with the knowledge, skills and expertise to provide:

  • Skilled Care - If a child or young person requires a specific procedure, for example intravenous, subcutaneous or intramuscular medication. Other examples include wound, post-surgery and orthopaedic care.
  • Symptom Control Management - If the child or young person requires a period of regular assessment and monitoring of symptoms, for example pain control in children requiring palliative care, exacerbation of chronic conditions such as eczema and constipation. The team also support oxygen dependent babies and children with complex healthcare needs.
  • Education - The team support and provide specialist training for families to enable them to care for their child at home and promote high quality family-centred care, e.g. administration of medicine, tracheostomy care etc. Our special school nurses work with children with complex needs to promote maximum attendance.
  • Early supported discharge / admission avoidance - The team can undertake procedures that can be done safely at home/ outside of hospital.
